The Enlighted (www.englitedinc.com) sense and control system is an intelligent building platform. It is a smart system that works with fluorescent, LED, and other fixture types. The system is comprised of four main components: Virtuo Sensor, Virtuo Powerpack, Virtuo Gateway, and Virtuo Energy Manager.

At the heart of the system is the intelligent Virtuo Sensor. These sensors are connected to each fixture in the building. Occupancy, ambient light, temperature and energy consumption data are collected at each fixture. Control profiles are stored in the sensors and govern how the fixtures are controlled in different scenarios.

There are templates for areas such as private offices, open offices, conference rooms, bathrooms, and hallways as well as the flexibility to create custom profiles. Based on the stored profiles, the Virtuo Sensor processes and analyzes the real-time conditions and controls the light accordingly.

The Virtuo Sensors communicate via wireless technology to the Virtuo Gateway. A few Virtuo Gateways on each floor relay this information via Ethernet to a server-type device called the Virtuo Energy Manager (VEM).

The Virtuo Energy Manager is a data repository for the Virtuo Series. The VEM helps commission, monitor and provision the Virtuo series of products. It also enables the Virtuo Series to integrate with third party, Building Automation and Demand Response systems. The VEM can be deployed as an appliance or deployed in a virtual machine (VM) environment. The system is a packaged WEB service using a standard WEB server and SQL database. The intuitive graphical interface to the VEM is via a WEB browser using HTTPS.

Installation in retrofit applications is simple and as fast as replacing a ballast. On average, it takes 15 to 20 minutes per fixture. There is no pre-engineering design or rewiring involved. In new construction and tenant improvement projects, the Virtuo Series can be integrated directly into the light fixture. Unlike traditional lighting and control systems, the intelligence in the sensors accomplishes commissioning in few seconds. Each and every fixture is automatically discovered and visible on the VEM through a user-friendly graphical user interface.

The Virtuo Series reduces lighting usage via three main features: Task tuning, daylight harvesting and occupancy detection. Task tuning allows for the light levels to be adjusted appropriately for the required task at hand. Most areas do not require full light intensity. The Virtuo Sensor can tune to a specific task, such as typing, designing, coding, reading, writing and more.

The software can fine-tune the fixtures as the needs of a work area change. Each Virtuo Sensor continuously measures ambient light levels so that if an occupant area has adequate natural light, the Virtuo Sensors will regulate the amount of artificial light. The occupancy sensor detects motion, enabling the Virtuo Sensor to adjust lighting and HVAC controls to appropriate levels for optimal satisfaction and maximum energy savings.

For example, if an occupant walks down a hallway, the smart Virtuo Sensors detect human presence and lights up the pathway as if to create a personal runway and illuminate the area ahead. And just as the lights ahead are gradually cranking up, in quick succession, the lights behind the occupant slowly dim.

In an open floor space, if someone walks away from a cubicle, the Virtuo system hibernates the lights in that environment. If the hallways are empty, the lights dim. This constant adaptation intelligently creates not only a more relaxed lighting environment, but also a more energy-efficient one.

For example, if the area in question is a conference room, the lights might be kept at 80% of full power level and dim or turn off once occupants leave the room. If the area under consideration is a stairwell that is not frequented very often, then the lights might ramp up fully to 100% illumination levels, and either dim quickly or entirely turn off, as needed.

The robust distributed architecture ensures there is no single point of failure. Each fixture makes decisions independently and thereby functions autonomously regardless of network connectivity. Profiles are stored locally per fixture and the only dependency on the managing server is system updates and configuration changes to the fixture. If the server ever goes down, the sensors keep functioning and control the lights. There is no issue of a brittle network that will interfere with the daily behavior of the fixture.

The Enlighted solution delivers energy savings in the range of 50 to 70 %. The individual sensors monitor, think, and adapt all with the goal of empowering the building to save energy 24/7. The system achieves immediate and sharp reduction in energy use and costs and guarantees a rapid payback.
