2006, Japan – TMD ( Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology, http://www.tmdisplay.com ) announced the development of a new TFT-LCD which realizes high transmittance, wide viewing angle and high speed response by combining two technologies, Optically Compensated Bend (OCB) and Field Sequential.
As Field Sequential technology does not require color filters differing from general color LCDs, this method can realize high transmittance without any absorption loss. In Color filter method, more than 70% of back light brightness is absorbed by color filters. It also maximums 3 times higher resolution without dividing 1 pixel when Color filter method use 3 sub-pixels which shows each RGB to make 1 pixel.
This technology has these great advantages but on the other hand, minimum 3 times higher speed driving to show RGBs is necessary, so high speed response LCD is indispensable to give its full performance.
Accordingly, TMD focused on the high-speed response that is one of the characteristics of OCB technology we have been developing, and combine it with the Field Sequential technology to achieve the development of a LCD that has a lot of great characters showing below.
- High Transmittance (2.6 times higher than our former OCB panels)
- Low Power Consumption
- Wide Viewing Angle (Upper/Lower 170 degree, Left/Right 170 degree)
- High Speed Response (3.3ms)
Also this LCD can realize high brightness and ultra high resolution
